A large technology‑consulting firm decided their teams needed a boost. They asked our corporate training team to design a workshop that foster better communication, faster decision‑making, stronger leadership, and a dash of camaraderie. Given their goals and their target date, I knew exactly who I wanted to be the instructor, and I was lucky enough to get them!

The kicked off the 20 person workshop with warm‑up games that had folks giggling, noticing body language, getting comfortable with mistakes. Then they advanced split to targeted drills: presentation‑skills improv (an improvised presentation where 4-6 teammates kick the focus to each other with very specifically stated expectations), agile collaboration rounds (teams build a moving “machine” using only their bodies), and staying present (the group followed a set pattern that had specific triggers all were tempted to rush past). These simple improv games forced teammates to listen, respond in the moment, lean into ideas, fail fast, and build together.

We wrapped with a reflection discussion: “What surprised you? How will you take this back to Monday?” Participants left high‑fiving, feeling loosened up, connected, and ready for work.

“Do You Like Your Neighbour?”

Ready to take your team through this game with a dash of fun, friendliness, and wind‑in‑your‑hair enthusiasm? 


How It Works:

  1. Arrange everyone sitting in a circle. One person stands in the middle, they are “it.”

  2. The goal for the person in the middle: find an empty seat in the circle so they get to sit and somebody else goes to the middle. Simple? Yes. Hilarious? Absolutely.

  3. The middle player walks up to someone sitting and asks: “Do you like your neighbour?”

  4. If the seated person says “No”, then the two folks sitting on either side of that person immediately switch seats. And the middle player tries to leap into one of those newly‑vacated seats before they land. If the middle player succeeds in taking a seat, the person they replaced becomes the new middle player.

  5. If the seated person says “Yes, but I don't like people who…”, then they finish the sentence with something true for several folks in the circle (for example: “…have pet fish,” “…ate breakfast cereal today,” “…wear glasses”). Everybody for whom that statement is true (including maybe the responder) then stands up and finds a new seat in the circle — and yes, the middle player tries to grab one of those seats while everyone else is shuffling. The person left without a seat becomes the new middle.

  6. And we repeat, fast and friendly, until folks are moving, thinking, laughing, noticing who does what, how fast they move, how they switch, how they watch each other, how the middle person strategizes.

  7. Discuss: How did you decide which seat to target? How did it feel to be “it”? What could this teach about seizing opportunities, being flexible, watching others, reacting quickly?

Why it’s awesome:

  • Super high‑energy, gets people moving and laughing.

  • Encourages observation: you notice who moves quickly, who hesitates, who takes initiative.

  • Encourages agility and quick decision‑making: middle player must act fast; others must respond fast.

  • Reinforces the idea that roles shift: sometimes you’re in the middle, sometimes you’re sitting. 

  • Inclusive: everyone participates, everyone moves (if only for seconds), no special skills needed, just willingness to play.

Tip for facilitation:

  • Encourage the middle person to stay smiling, approachable — if they look scary everyone freezes. Making it playful helps the energy.

  • After a round or two, ask folks to reflect on one moment where they hesitated and one where they jumped quickly — helps translate to “in work” mindset.

  • If the group is large (say 50+), you can run two simultaneous circles and then have a “championship” round where the winners from each circle face off.

  • Use a silly prompt when you ask “Do you like your neighbour?” — the funnier the finishing phrase, the more people move, the more dynamic the energy.
