Improv@Work

Imagine a crisp, electric Spokane morning, where a fast-growing financial services firm gathers 40 sharp minds hungry to shatter communication roadblocks and pump up collaboration like a rock concert crowd.
Group size: 40 high-energy pros, so we brought two instructors to keep the momentum lightning-fast and playful.
Workshop focus: Mastering team synergy, powering up presentation skills, dialing in agility and leadership with humor and heart.
Challenge? The client wanted to ditch stiff meetings and spark authentic connection to fuel creativity and trust across remote and in-person squads.
How we did it:
Warm-up: We kicked off with your brilliant “Energy 1-10” exercise — everyone in a big circle, squatting low, building from a whisper to a roar, rising physically and vocally, syncing as one powerhouse tribe.
Scene crafting: Rapid-fire scenes that pushed players to pivot, listen, and lead with empathy.
Pitch Play: Teams improvised bold new service ideas, practicing confident, clear, and wildly engaging presentations.
Big energy debrief: What did the energy scale teach us about presence and group flow? How can we apply this pump-up in the office?
Finale? Everyone walking out buzzing, bonded, and energized — the kind of connection that’s Spokane-strong and ready to move mountains.

A Sample Improv Exercise!
Energy 1-10: Level Up Your Team’s Collective Vibe
Why This Exercise Is Basically Improv Wizardry
Alright, improv geeks, gather ’round! This is not just some random count-to-10 drill — this is a shared energy ritual, a sonic and physical crescendo that’s like turning your team’s collective volume knob from zero to max awesomeness. It’s like when the whole cast finally hits their mark on a group scene and the energy just clicks—except here you get to feel it ripple through your bodies and voices.
You’re waking up not just your lungs, but your inner neural improv circuits — syncing your team like a perfectly timed jazz band riff or a Jedi mind meld. Imagine your group as a living, breathing power surge, each person’s “voltage” ramping up in perfect harmony. Boom. Instant alertness. Bye-bye, tension. Hello, “we got this” team mojo.
Ready to watch your crew morph from whispering wimps into loud, proud improv warriors? Let’s geek out and get started.
Setup & What You’ll Need (AKA Improv Lab Essentials)
Space: A comfy circle zone where everyone can see each other like a tight-knit improv troupe.
Participants: Best with 8–16 players—big enough for dynamics, small enough for connection.
Time: 5-10 minutes, perfect for a quick energy hack or a scene transition warm-up.
Mood: Bring your playful spirit, your curiosity, and your best “let’s see what happens” mindset.
Step-by-Step Breakdown (Like a Scene Breakdown, but for Energy)
1. Circle Up, Power Down: The Ground Zero
Get everyone into a circle, shoulder-to-shoulder like a squad gearing up for a group scene. Then drop it low — squat down, channel your inner ninja or a crouching tiger ready to pounce. This grounded stance is your launchpad for the energy lift-off. Think of it like crouching before a high jump or the pre-game huddle before a big scene.
Pro Tip: If squatting’s tricky for some, encourage a gentle bend or even an imaginary squat—because the brain is the biggest improv muscle here.
2. Whisper the 1: The Softest Opening Beat
Explain the mission: you’re counting together from 1 to 10, but with a twist worthy of any improv “yes, and” moment. Start so quietly it’s like sneaking past a dragon’s lair without waking the beast. Everyone says “one” — barely audible, bodies still low.
This isn’t just volume control; it’s a moment of tuning in. Like listening for cues in a scene, watch your teammates’ eyes, their breath, the tiniest spark of energy flickering to life.
3. Crank It Up Slowly: The Energy Arc
With each number, the volume and energy gradually grow. “Two,” a little louder and higher; “three,” a bit more, bodies rising, gestures expanding.
4. Reach the Peak at 10: The Grand Finale
This is your energy crescendo, your team’s collective high note. Hold it. Feel it pulse through the room like the climax of your favorite improv scene.
5. Reset and Repeat: Because Practice Makes Magic
You can do a single round or multiple, throwing in some curveballs for fun:
Vary the tempo—slow build, quick burst, your call.
Add gestures: clap at 3, stomp at 5, spin at 8—because why not?
