Improv@Work

A tech services startup based in Reno (about 30 professionals) hired an improv duo for a full‑day workshop focused on creativity, team collaboration, presentation skills, and quick adaptability. They faced a challenge: cross‑team miscommunication was slowing product development.
The workshop started small—with mini‑teams of 4–6 doing name‑games, trust circles, and quick improv prompts to build openness and confidence. That warmed everyone up. After that, the two instructors led the full group (30 people split into breakout pairs) through scene‑building exercises involving client‑scenario pitching and genre‑switching—promoting agility and listening under pressure.
A highlight: a “client meltdown” game where teams had to respond to escalating scenario changes on the fly—building adaptability, collaboration, and calm leadership. Each rotation reshuffled teams so everyone got diverse perspectives. By midday, participants were laughing, improvising confidently, and offering bold ideas.
In the afternoon, individuals volunteered to give short impromptu presentations using only audience suggestions—boosting presentation presence. At the end, feedback circles revealed improved empathy, sharper team mindsets, and fresh product ideas emerging from newfound trust and creative energy. Client leadership reported a noticeable shift in cross‑team communication post‑workshop.

A Sample Improv Exercise!
🎭 Bong Bong Bong
(Super Fun Mime Relay)
Set‑up
– Four players: Players 2, 3, 4 stand in a line with backs turned and hands over ears (completely out of the sensory loop).
– Player 1 stands facing Player 2 and receives a common expression (e.g. “piece of cake”, “break a leg”) to convey.
Round Flow
Player 1 has 1 minute to mime and use playful gibberish to communicate the phrase to Player 2—no words allowed except the nonsense sounds.
Player 2 interprets what they think is being said, then turns to mime + gibberish to Player 3.
Player 3 repeats to Player 4 the same way.
At the end, everyone shouts together, “Bong Bong Bong!”, and Players 2, 3 and 4 each explain what they thought the phrase was.
Why It’s Brilliant
It’s energetic, silly, and inclusive—everyone stays on their toes and laughs when the meanings wildly morph.
Fosters non‑verbal communication, active listening, creative interpretation, and quick thinking.
Perfect for letting people let loose, lighten the mood, and spark bonding—or breaking up a long meeting with a joyful reset.
Tone & Hosting Tips
– Keep it cheery and encouraging: “All right, Player 1—give us your best mime magic!”
– Share a light anecdote: “Once someone mimed a donut… we ended up with ‘broken phone’!”
– Rotate starting players so it’s fair and funny for all.
– End with celebratory applause for how far the phrase traveled—even if it became “pizza party” along the way.
