A tech consulting firm based in Plano, grappling with siloed departments and stiff presentation styles. They invite an improv coaching team to host a two‑day workshop in a Downtown Plano corporate meeting space.

We kicked off Day 1 with four small groups of 6–8 people, diving into trust and listening games like “One Word Story,” fostering rapid collaboration. That warmed everyone up for Day 2’s large cohort of 125 people, guided by three instructors rotating in breakout zones.

Instructor A worked agility: teams switched improv scenarios mid‑scene whenever a “customer emergency” card was played—sudden pivot drills reflecting real project pivots. Instructor B led “Yes, and…” storytelling to unlock communication and build positive momentum. Meanwhile, Instructor C focused on presentation skills: participants improvised product pitches, then translated that energy into their technical proposals—boosting creativity under pressure.

Mid‑workshop check‑in: small groups (around 30 people) rotated into leadership games where different people called scenes, encouraging empathy and situational awareness. By the end, feedback was glowing—better cross‑team chat, more engaging presentations, and renewed team confidence.

Result? Client satisfaction and a LOT of smiling faces.

Improv Exercise

Make More Interesting

Perfect for when your players are getting a little too comfy in “talky‑talk” land.

The Setup
One brave soul steps up and starts a scene. Any type of scene is fine, just a basic improv set up — CLAP!

The Twist
On that clap, the player has to make exactly what they were already doing… more interesting. Not different. Not faster. Not suddenly something else. Just… juicier. If they were opening a briefcase, they now open that briefcase like it’s the most thrilling, nerve‑jangling, glorious briefcase in the history of briefcases. Maybe the hinges squeak like a haunted door. Maybe it’s so heavy they can barely lift it. Maybe it’s clearly full of angry bees (but you never actually show the bees—because that would be advancing the action).

The Rule
You do not get to advance the scene. No taking something out of the briefcase. No suddenly finding a hidden compartment. Your only job is to stay in the exact moment you were in—just make it more watchable, more fun, more “oh my goodness I can’t look away.”

The Secret Sauce
This is where you drift into the magical land of the clownesque. Think Charlie Chaplin wrestling with a stubborn door handle. Laurel & Hardy trying to fit a sofa through a tiny doorway. Mr. Bean battling… well, anything, really. It’s the art of milking a single moment until the audience is desperate to see what’s next.

Variations
Once they’ve squeezed all the fun out of that moment, give a second clap. This time, they can advance the scene. This is sometimes called Advancing and Expanding—you build tension by holding, then give sweet relief by moving forward.
