A financial services team based in Madison (about 25 people from a local investment advisory firm) invited a pair of our improv instructors to lead a team‑building workshop at a downtown meeting space. The firm wanted to strengthen communication, shared leadership, and creative problem‑solving after a project underperforming due to tight silos among departments.

The session began with a warm‑up small‑group phase (teams of 4–6) doing quick trust building, name game, and energy‑pass exercises. That kicked off laughter and opened everyone up. For the full group, the two instructors guided collaborative storytelling games, collaborative scenes, and active listening challenges.

The group got into presentation‑skills improv, where volunteers performed short unscripted pitches and received playful peer coaching. Then a first‑inspiring problem game: clients role‑played difficult investor scenarios, and improv teams had to creatively respond with composure and quick adaptation — building agility and leadership in high‑stress communication.

As the day went on, participants rotated pods to collaborate across silos, breaking down department walls and fostering trust. By the end, the firm saw immediate shifts: more engaged collaboration in breakout sessions, improved empathy around client communication, and fresh ideas sparked in follow‑ups.

A Sample Improv Exercise!

Improv Exercise

The Anyone‑Who Game 🪑

Set-up

  • Everyone but one person sits in a loosely formed circle.

  • One person stands in the center—this is the “middle.”

Step 1: The middle person calls out a descriptive category (e.g. “Anyone who…” is wearing blue, has cats, drinks coffee, or even plays a musical instrument).
Step 2: If that fits you, you stand up and move to swap chairs with someone else.

  • Everyone affected hustles to find a new seat.
Step 3: Whoever ends up chairless becomes the new center person.
Bonus Rule—“Fruitbasket” Call: When someone in the middle shouts Fruitbasket, everyone must jump up and find a different seat—total shuffle!

Why This Works So Well

  • It’s inclusive & fast‑moving—everyone gets engaged at once, no whispering or exclusion.

  • It builds agility and attention—people have to listen, think, move, and adapt quickly.

  • It’s perfect for team bonding and light energy breaks in a meeting or workshop.

Tone & Tips

  • Keep the tone bright and supportive: “Okay everyone—Anyone who drinks tea—go! Off you go!”
