Improv@Work

In sun‑blazing, border‑buzzing Laredo, Texas, a powerhouse corporate trading firm waved the white flag and called us in for backup. The problem? Team silos so tall you could mistake them for downtown high‑rises. Departments weren’t talking, collaboration was crawling, and projects were dying slow, tragic deaths in the land of “I thought they were handling that.” They needed a miracle. Or, at the very least, a turbo‑charged, laughter‑soaked intervention.
Enter: our improv dream team. They booked a 30‑person corporate shake‑up session, and we rolled in with two rock‑star instructors—one a Jedi Master of creative listening (the kind who can hear the subtext in your subtext), the other a wizard of collaboration and leadership games (the kind who can make “working together” feel like the championship round of the World Cup).
From the moment we walked into the room, we could feel it: that cautious corporate energy where everyone’s smiling politely but secretly wondering, “What have I been signed up for?” We knew our job—flip that skepticism into pure, unfiltered team joy.
We launched into name‑and‑gesture icebreakers like it was a high‑stakes game show. Within minutes, the tension started popping like bubble wrap. Executives were chuckling, analysts were busting out moves you’d never expect to see outside a wedding dance floor, and suddenly this “training” was starting to look a lot more like a Friday night comedy jam.
Then we dropped the big one: King Lizard. Oh yes. The crown jewel. The big goofy pièce de résistance. In seconds, the room was a glorious circus—VPs making ostrich neck jabs, accountants howling like coyotes, managers flapping invisible penguin wings like their lives depended on it. People were tripping over their own laughter. But beneath the absurdity? Serious skills were firing—rapid‑fire decision‑making, ninja‑level observation, fearless non‑verbal communication.
We split them into pods of eight for industry‑specific improv challenges. The task: act out ridiculous but strangely plausible trade‑related disasters—mystery shipments, vanishing cargo, out‑of‑nowhere market shifts—and find wild, creative fixes on the spot. Suddenly, the quietest analysts were stepping into leadership roles, big‑picture thinkers were improvising like Broadway pros, and cross‑department rivalries dissolved into high‑five‑fuelled collaborations.
The grand finale? One massive, everything‑goes mash‑up where every single person got tossed into the chaos together. It was like a corporate flash mob with better punchlines.

🦎 KING LIZARD: The Game That Turns Mild‑Mannered Humans into a Glorious Animal Kingdom
Here’s how this beautiful madness works:
Pick your creature. Could be a cat, a monkey, a dog — but, honestly, why play it safe? Be a narwhal! A tap‑dancing flamingo! A battle‑ready shrimp with jazz hands!
Invent your signature move + sound. Make it big, make it bold, make it so weird your colleagues can’t unsee it. (Trust me, that’s the point.)
Pass the power. You kick things off by doing your noise and motion. Then you immediately do someone else’s noise and motion, hurling the spotlight at them like a flaming improv frisbee.
They take over. That person blasts out their animal impression, then yeets the chaos to another unsuspecting victim.
Repeat until the jungle is electric.
Now, here’s the kicker: if you mess up? You’re OUT for that round. Forget who’s who? Gone. Do your own motion when you were supposed to do theirs? Eliminated. The last animal standing becomes the royal ruler — the undisputed, all‑powerful King Lizard. (Crowns optional but highly encouraged.)
The beauty of this game? It’s part reaction‑time training, part observation bootcamp, part cardio workout, and 100% ridiculous. You will howl. You will cry‑laugh. You will discover new facial muscles.
