A creative marketing agency was hitting a wall. Not the dramatic kind, like a thunderous existential “who even are we?” wall, but more like a slow, creeping office fog where Zoom meetings turned into yawns in costume and collaboration started resembling polite standoffs. Siloed departments. Half-hearted brainstorming. Decks delivered like slow-cooked oatmeal. You know the type.As fate would have it, someone on the team suggested an improv workshop. The kind with games. And movement. And, dare we say it, feelings. They booked a medium-sized session, about 25 folks, right off Asbury Park’s delightfully gritty-glam boardwalk. The venue? A community arts space that smelled like surf wax, espresso, and possibility—walls painted with oversized jellyfish and vintage concert posters curling at the corners. Think: creativity with a pulse.Enter two instructors, because when your team’s got more than twenty folks who take themselves just a tad too seriously, you need a 2x dose of whimsical authority. One instructor focused on playful communication, the other on trust and emergent leadership. The vibe? Warm but zesty. Kind of like your favorite aunt’s kitchen—if your aunt also taught scene work and wore Crocs ironically. The workshop was titled “From Bored to Boardwalk: Boosting Creativity, Agility, and Communication”, and it kicked off on a cloudy afternoon with that classic Jersey Shore humidity that feels like the air itself is rooting for your transformation.First up: mirroring exercises. Pairs locked eyes (after a little awkward throat-clearing) and began mimicking each other’s increasingly bizarre movements. At one point, the head of digital marketing was flapping her arms like a startled pelican while the ops manager mirrored back a wobbly head-bop that looked suspiciously like air banjo. Somewhere in that weirdness? Connection. Then came the “Yes, and…” storytelling rounds, where teams riffed off each other’s wildest ideas. A pitch that started as “a beach-themed pop-up” morphed—enthusiastically—into “an underwater VR dance festival for stressed-out CEOs.” The goal wasn’t realism. It was trust. Listening. Building on each other’s sparks without dousing them in doubt. Finally: presentation flip-flops. Teams took their standard, familiar decks—those soul-flattening artifacts of boardroom culture—and re-presented them while fielding surprise curveballs from the audience. “Now do it as a game show!” someone shouted. “With puppets!” yelled another. The results were absurd. And brilliant. Presenters learned to adapt, flow, and—crucially—have fun on their feet.By late afternoon soft skills had leveled up. Team dynamics had Defrosted. Creativity was bubbling like a boardwalk funnel cake fryer. (Don't judge me on this language, it actually came from the marketing agency!)They walked out not just more agile as professionals, but lighter as people—equipped with fresh perspective, looser shoulders, and a few glorious inside jokes (“Remember the flamingo pitch?”). Mission accomplished.

Quirky. Creative. Rock‑and‑roll‑tinged. The Asbury isn’t your typical business hideaway—it’s more like your team's artsy cousin who throws epic rooftop jams and coffee-fueled breakfast meetups. Their Gather event program covers retreats, off-sites, team-building — in spaces ranging from 600 up to 4,300 sq ft, and accommodating from private gatherings to groups of 300.

Now this one? This one’s got soul.

It doesn’t scream “conference center”—and thank God for that. You won’t find digital whiteboards or branded bottled water waiting in an LED-lit ballroom. What you will find is authenticity, in big, nostalgic gulps. Cozy corners perfect for strategy huddles. A sun-drenched lounge where ideas loosen up with the help of some sea air. A little disco shimmer, a lot of old-school charm, and a quietly rebellious spirit that says, “We do things differently here—and better for it.”

Not slick—soulful. And sometimes, that’s exactly what makes the sparks fly.

ELEPHANT IT 🐘

a warm-up, a chaos engine, a cardio surprise

Yes, it’s ridiculous. Yes, you’ll look absurd. And yes—you will love it.

Here’s how it works:

  • Everyone puts one hand behind their back, palm facing outward. That’s your “elephant ear.”

  • Your other arm becomes your trunk—the mighty snout of mischief.

  • When the game starts, your mission is to sneak up, spin around, sprint (responsibly), and tap as many back hands (ears!) as possible with your trunk—while protecting your own ear like it's the last snack in the green room.

If someone taps your back hand?
You don’t sulk. You don’t apologize.

You swear.

Loudly. Joyfully. Creatively.

Real curses, made-up expletives, Shakespearian insults—anything goes, as long as it’s expressive. (“Shiny waffle nugget!” is valid. So is “Oh, you absolute pineapple.”)

The whole thing lasts maybe 60 seconds—90 if you're feeling brave or caffeinated. It’s a blast of movement, laughter, and very silly combat tactics. It gets people out of their heads and into their bodies. It breaks tension like a piñata. It builds agility, reaction time, and the kind of group joy you can’t fake in a Slack channel.

Pro tip: Stop the game just before people get winded.

Let the herd stampede.
